Hi.

This site is an account of my travels. I hope you find it useful.

Mt Young

Mt Young

After climbing Mt Albert on 27 January 2024, Col and I decided we’d also give Mt Young a try on our way back to St Helens. This is a short 1.6km walk, that only took us 1½ hours (return), including a break on the summit.

Location

The trail head is located on Evercreech Road, just south of the intersection with Mt Albert Road, and is about about a 40 minute drive west from St Helens. Where the trail departs from the road is well marked with pink tape — although we were too focused on the GPS location from AllTrails and ended up bush basing in slightly south of this!

Track Notes

As I noted above, the track is extremely well marked with tape — you just need to find the tape on the roadside to get started (ignore the AllTrails GPS location of the start, which is very slightly to the south).

The track is also very straight forward, not terribly steep, and only has some very minor scrambling near the summit.

Although not a terribly high mountain, the summit does provide some good views of the surrounding mountains in the area, which includes several Abels.

The one confusing thing for us though was that AllTrails shows the walk as being a loop, but for the life of us we couldn’t find the loopy part to the north and ended up doing it as an in-and-out walk (AllTrails route and our route shown on the maps below).
