Mt Penny West
On Sunday the 8th of May 2022, Col and I did a quick trip up Mt Penny West in the Tasmania’s central highlands. This was probably our quickest Abel, with the 2km return trip only taking us 1 hour and 43 minutes, including a morning tea stop on the summit.
Location
The start of the walk is accessed from Arthurs Lake Road, just out of Morass Bay.
After leaving Morass Bay, we continued until we reached a cattle grate in the road and parked the cars here. Shortly prior to the cattle grate there were several cairns on the side of the road marking the start of the walk — although as it is untracked there is no definite start point, and I know other have started from opposite the four-wheel-drive track that is passed shortly before.
The Track
There is absolutely no track, cairns, or tape leading to the summit. It is a pure bush bash through low scrub and widely dispersed trees, with occasional scrambling over slippery rocks. Being such a short walk, it is very straight forward, but with no clear view of the summit while walking, some sort of GPS based map is a must.
