Mt Connection
On Sunday the 10th of December 2023, Col and I were looking for a shorter walk that was close to home, and settled on Mt Connection in Wellington Park.
The Stats
Distance: 9km (return)
Time: 3½ hrs (inc. lunch break on the summit)
Elevation gain: 162m (although the up and down of the track meant we did climbed 332m)
Location
Mt Connection can be approached from several directions, but the most obvious approach, if it is the only destination, is from Big Bend on Mt Wellington’s Pinnacle Road (-42.88527 147.22141).
The Track
From Big Bend, the hike starts out along the Big Ben Fire Trail, which starts relatively flat, but soon drops down steeply to the junction with the Mt Connection Track.
The start of the Mt Connection track continues to descend slightly before becoming a steady assent to the summit, although the track bypasses the summit itself, continuing to the East West Trail, and requires a short off-track departure to reach the peak.
The summit itself isn’t particularly auspicious, but does provide views of some of the surrounding peaks, including Mt Wellington, Mt Arthur (at the start of the track), Collins Bonnet, Collins Cap, and Mt Montague.
It was an easy pleasant day walk, and worth considering if you are looking for a shorter walk in Wellington Park.
