Mt Strzelecki
I have climbed Mt Strzelecki on Flinders Island four times now. Once each in 1995 and 1996 and again in 2023 and 2024. But somehow I have never written up.
Most recently, on Saturday the 6th of July 2024, Gabby and I set out to summit the mountain, after a failed attempt to reach the top in October due to Weather.
The Stats
Distance: 7km (return)
Time: 4½ hours (inc. lunch break on the summit)
Elevation Gain: 776m
Location
Mt Strzelecki is located on Flinders Island in Bass Strait. It is located towards the south of the island and the trail head can be found on Trousers Point Road, about a 15 minute drive from Whitemark.
The Track
The track starts from the road edge and is well signposted (see image above).
The initial part of the track starts gently and follows an unnamed stream.
As it climbs, you start to encounter rock formations, and the track increases in steepness as you get closer to the summit, although it is never particularly challenging, and there is only one small scramble right before the summit.
Closer to the summit, and from the summit itself, amazing views open up in all directions.
In good weather, climbing Mt Strzelecki is a must do activity on Flinders Island.
