Crescent Bay and Mt Brown
Tasmania’s famous Three Capes Track confusingly only sees you walk to two capes: Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy. There is another named cape on the Tasman Peninsula, Cape Raul, but the track doesn’t go anywhere near it?
Searching online, it is suggested the track is named Three Capes because of the views to the distant Cape Raul, but I’m sure I was told by someone that the third cape of the walk was actually Mt Brown, which is visited by boat (without going ashore) at the start of the walk.
In any event, of these four capes, Mt Brown was the only one I haven’t visited, so on Sunday the 26th of June 2022 Col and I set out on the Crescent Bay Track to visit both Mt Brown and Crescent Bay.
Location
The Crescent Bay Track is located near Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula and starts from the Remarkable Cave car park. AllTrails has a good map of the route (linked from the below Three Capes map).
The Track
The track from the car park is easy and well graded to Crescent Bay, however there is only a cairned rout from the turn off to Mt Brown to the summit.
About 1.5km in, a bridge is reached over the Maingon Blowhole
At around 3km, about 45 minutes in, the turn-off to Mt Brown is reached. We decided to do this first before heading on to Crescent Bay, with the return trip to the summit (from the turnoff) taking us just over half an hour.
We then continued on to Crescent Bay, where we stopped for a briefly for morning tea, before retracing our steps to the car.
All up, the the approximately 10km walk took us 3 hours, and was a great way to spend a morning.
